Root Canal Treatment

ROOT CANAL THERAPY

Root canal treatment also known as (endodontic therapy, endodontic treatment, root canal treatment). All teeth have blood and nerve supply within the pulp chamber and the canals within the root of the teeth carry the same. Whenever the integrity of this chamber is violated viz trauma or decay , this nerve and blood complex can get infected. RCT is a method to remove, clean the infected tissue inside and fill the  clean canals with a biocompatible material. It is an alternative to tooth extraction. If all other parameters are fulfilled such as the health of the bone, extent of fracture, the health of the roots ,then RCT is one of the best methods to save a tooth.

STEPS

  1. CLEANING THE ROOT CANAL : First the dentist establishes access to the canals of the root through the pulp chamber to remove the infected dentin and pulp, disinfection and the subsequent shaping cleaning and decontamination of the root canal with the small files and irrigating solutions.
  2. FILLING THE ROOT CANAL: Obturation – filling of the cleaned and decontaminated canals is done with an inert filling such as gutta-percha and typically zincoxide eugenol based cement.
  1. POST ENDODONTIC RESTORATION OR CROWN:  How ever the tooth will be more brittle or fragile than it was before so a crown or filling offers more protection. Once there is a crown or a filling is done, the person can use the tooth as before.

ROOT COVERAGE PROCEDURES

Gum recession is process in which the tissue that surrounds the tooth pulls away and exposes more of the tooth or even the root of the tooth. The three leading reasons why gum tissue recedes are hard tooth brushing , periodontal disease and bad bite. Roots that are exposed can become sensitive to temperature changes , vulnerable to decay and have a loss of surrounding bone.
